What Is a Cataract?
Share
If you've been told you have a cataract, or you're noticing your vision becoming cloudy or hazy, you may be wondering what's actually happening inside your eye. Cataracts are one of the most common eye conditions in the world — and the good news is they're very treatable.
What Is a Cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside your eye. The lens sits behind the iris (the coloured part of your eye) and is normally clear, allowing light to pass through and focus on the retina at the back of the eye. When a cataract develops, the lens becomes cloudy or opaque, causing vision to become blurred, misty, or dim.
What Causes Cataracts?
Cataracts are most commonly caused by the natural ageing process. As we get older, proteins in the lens begin to break down and clump together, causing the cloudiness. However, other factors can contribute, including:
- Prolonged exposure to UV light
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- Certain medications, such as long-term steroid use
- Eye injuries or previous eye surgery
- Family history
What Are the Symptoms?
Cataracts develop slowly, so you may not notice any changes at first. Over time, you might experience:
- Blurred, cloudy, or misty vision
- Difficulty seeing in low light or at night
- Colours appearing faded or yellowed
- Increased sensitivity to glare from lights
- Frequent changes to your glasses prescription
- Double vision in one eye
How Are Cataracts Treated?
In the early stages, updated glasses or contact lenses may help manage the symptoms. However, the only way to fully treat a cataract is through a straightforward surgical procedure. Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear artificial lens. It is one of the most commonly performed and successful operations in the UK.
