What Is Red Eye?
Share
Red eye is one of the most common reasons people visit their optician. Whether it's a mild irritation or something more persistent, understanding what's causing your red eye is the first step to getting the right treatment.
What Is Red Eye?
Red eye refers to the redness or bloodshot appearance of the white part of the eye (known as the sclera). It occurs when the small blood vessels on the surface of the eye become enlarged or irritated, making the eye appear red or pink.
What Causes Red Eye?
There are many possible causes of red eye, ranging from minor irritations to conditions that require prompt attention:
- Conjunctivitis (pink eye) – An infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane covering the white of the eye. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or allergies.
- Dry eyes – When your eyes don't produce enough tears or the right quality of tears, they can become red and irritated.
- Allergies – Pollen, dust, pet dander, and other allergens can trigger red, itchy, watery eyes.
- Eye strain – Prolonged screen use, reading, or driving can cause eye fatigue and redness.
- Contact lens wear – Wearing lenses for too long or using the wrong type can irritate the eyes.
- Broken blood vessel – A subconjunctival haemorrhage can cause a bright red patch on the white of the eye, usually harmless and caused by sneezing, coughing, or straining.
- Glaucoma – In some cases, red eye can be a sign of acute glaucoma, which requires urgent treatment.
When Should I Be Concerned?
Most cases of red eye are harmless and clear up on their own. However, you should seek advice promptly if you experience:
- Sudden or severe eye pain
- Significant changes in vision
- Sensitivity to light
- A discharge that is thick, yellow, or green
- Red eye that doesn't improve after a few days
How Is Red Eye Treated?
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Options may include:
- Antibiotic eye drops for bacterial conjunctivitis
- Antihistamine drops for allergic red eye
- Lubricating eye drops for dry eyes
- Rest and reduced screen time for eye strain
